SPELLING RULES FOR PLURAL NOUNS

En inglés el plural se forma añadiendo una -s al sustantivo: kitchen > kitchens .


Pero también hay algunas reglas para ciertas palabras, vamos a verlas:


1. Si la palabra termina en -y y le precede una consonante la -y cambia a -i y añade -es, e.g. lady- ladies. Si la palabra termina en -y y va precedida de vocal no cambia, e.g. toy - toys.


2. Las palabras que terminan en -x, -sh, -ch o -s añaden -es, e.g. church = churches.


3. Las palabras que terminan en -f o -fe cambian a v antes de añadir -es, e.g. leaf - leaves.


ATENCIÓN: hay palabras que no cumplen esta regla: chief - chiefs, roof = roofs, belief = beliefs, chef = chefs, cafe = cafes, handkerchief = handkerchiefs, safe = safes.
4. Los plurales irregulares no siguen ninguna regla y hay que memorizarlos:

FOOD & DRINK





¿Sabes de dónde viene la palabra "sandwich"? Es una historia bastante interesante. Lee a continuación. Sandwich es, en realidad, una pequeña ciudad situada en el sureste de Inglaterra. En el siglo XVIII un aristócrata, Sir John Montagu, cuarto conde de Sandwich, le encantaba jugar a las cartas. Le gustaba tanto que ni siquiera quería parar para comer, él quería seguir y seguir jugando. Un día tuvo una idea: dijo a sus criados que le preparasen un trozo de carne entre dos rodajas de pan, y así, podría coger la comida con una mano y seguir jugando con la otra, sin necesidad de usar tenedor o cuchillo. Este fue el comienzo del sandwich. Por lo tanto gracias a Sir John hoy día llamamos sandwiches a los sandwiches.

TRAVEL WORDS

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

Place prepositions , are prepositions that are used to describe the place or position of all types of nouns. It is common for the preposition to be placed before the noun. When we refer to Place prepositions we usually refer to "in", "at" and "on".

In - Is usually used to state that someone or something is in a (the boundaries can be physical or virtual place).
On - Is usually used to state someone or something is on top of a surface.
At - Is usually used to state something or someone is at a specific place.

A list of most prepositions of place.

At a specific place:at the mall, at the table, at work

On a place that is physically on top of a place: on the table, on the wall, on the floor

In a place that is enclosed or within boundaries: in the city, in the box, in the park


IMPORTANT: In English we say: on the island, in the city/country side, in the mountains - except when you mean that something or someone is physically on the mountain, at the office
